Brief Description:Building on similar studies conducted in Washington, Hawaii, New Zealand, and Thailand, this study is examining factors that influence people to prepare, or sometimes not prepare, for tsunamis. It also seeks to understand the complexity of factors that influence people’s responses to different warnings of tsunamis. The project team consists of researchers from universities in the US, New Zealand, and Australia. Study sites include communities in 7 states and territories (Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, Florida, and Hawaii) in 2006 and again in 2007. In each community, we are collecting information with questionnaires that ask residents about their experiences and attitudes with regard to tsunamis. The questionnaire also asks about people’s knowledge of tsunamis and any preparations that they and their family have made to respond to warnings of tsunamis. Ultimately, findings will be used to inform policy decisions and develop and assess education and awareness programs for tsunami hazard mitigation.
